North Wart Cottage was built in the early 1900s and has been lovingly renovated to offer a spacious, serene, and modern self-catering accommodation. The cottage is in the island of Bressay, a 7-minute frequent car and foot passenger ferry crossing from the centre of Lerwick (Shetland's main town), offering a quiet rural setting with quick and easy access to town amenities and an ideal base from where to explore all that Shetland can offer.

North Wart Cottage is set on high ground surrounded by its own private secluded gardens and 2 woodlands where you can enjoy wildlife and birdsong, and uninterrupted panoramic views across to Lerwick, and which, on a clear day, extend as far south as Sumburgh Head. Regular visitors to the property include otters, hedgehogs, and a wide variety of birds including robins, curlews, snipes, terns, oyster catchers, lapwings and great skuas.

The house is full of character and offers a quaint, warm, comfortable, and peaceful stay. The porch leads into an open plan sunroom, dining room (with fireplace) and fully equipped kitchen (with Bosch fridge/freezer, Bosch electric oven, induction hob, microwave oven, coffee machine, toaster, and kettle). The sunroom enjoys open views of the countryside and of Bressay Sound across to Lerwick and is the perfect spot from where you can observe wildlife and watch the Northlink ferry and other boats head in and out of Lerwick Harbour. The dining room leads into the living room that has two, three-seater electric recliner sofas, TV, and a selection of books, where you can relax after a day spent exploring the isles. The bedrooms are located at the rear of the house with windows overlooking the private rear garden. There is one shower room that has been renovated and upgraded in October 2023 and has an electric shower over a spacious shower enclosure. The utility room has a washing machine and clothes rail.

There is ample on-site parking available on the property and WIFI is available throughout the house. The cottage can host up to six guests, and we’re delighted to welcome well-behaved four-legged guests too. Early check-in and late check-out is possible if there are no other bookings and through prior agreement. Home essentials, towels, bed linen and cooking basics including tea, coffee, sugar and milk are provided.

Directions

North Wart Cottage is approximately 2 miles from the ferry terminal. Once off the ferry, follow the signs to Kirkabister. When you get to the road leading to the Bressay lighthouse, you will reach a turning on the left signposted 'East Ham'. Take this turning, going all the way up the road (just past 2 red houses) you will get to the start of North Wart's private driveway. Head up this driveway until you reach North Wart, a blue cottage at the end of the track.
